The team at Compassionate Funerals Queensland are proud to be partnering with the local community to host the inaugural Brendale Death Cafe.

We know – you probably couldn’t think of anything worse than sitting in a room full of strangers talking about the world’s most morbid topic. But we urge you to take a read of the below and consider joining us for a relaxed chat on Wednesday, 20 June 2018 at 6pm for what is sure to be a session filled with stories and questions, tears and laughter. Make sure you let us know here if you’re keen to attend!

What is a Death Cafe?

The Death Cafe concept was developed in September 2011 by Jon Underwood, who held his very first Death Cafe in the basement of his home in east London. He invited all to join, whether spiritual or not, and put out tea and cake for a chat. Since then, Death Cafes have spread quickly across Europe, North America and Australasia. As of today, the organisation has offered 5823 Death Cafes in 52 countries.

At a Death Cafe, people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. The organisation’s objective is simple: ‘increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’. It is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or theme. Contrary to popular assumption, it is not designed to be a grief support or counselling session.

Death Cafes are always offered:

  • On a not for profit basis
  • In an accessible, respectful and confidential space
  • With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action
  • Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!
